US Democracy

Sung to the tune of American Pie, by Don McLean

A long, long time ago, I can still remember
How that social progress used to make me smile
And even though Republicans
Thought being gay was a sin
They couldn’t legislate all of their bile

But January 6th made me shiver
With every podcast I’d consider
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn’t take one more step
I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about all of his lies
But something touched me deep inside
The day democracy died

So, bye, bye, US democracy
I turned on the TV but it was hypocrisy
And them good old boy were just following lies
Singin’, “This is the day America dies
This is the day America dies”

Did you write the Book of Hate?
And do you have faith in Melania’s mate?
If Fox News and Newsmax tell you so?
Do you believe in banning books?
Scaring poll workers with your looks
And can you teach me how to pardon crooks?
